When you go to work, you have the right to a safe workspace. Even those who work in inherently risky occupations should have recourse when they are harmed by the carelessness or negligence of another person. At the Law Offices of Kropach & Kropach, we are here to help when you need a Los Angeles on the job injury attorney. Let us get to work investigating what happened so we can secure the compensation you deserve. Today, we want to highlight a recent workplace death that happened right here in Los Angeles.

This is an all too common construction incident

We have learned that a man died early in July at a construction site at a Los Angeles home. When the Los Angeles County Fire Department got to the scene, they said the man was buried chest-high inside of a construction trench. Fire officials say that the victim fell ten feet into the partially collapsed trench that was in place to work on an underground sewer line. The worker was alive when first responders arrive but died from his injuries at the scene.

Workplace injuries and deaths are usually preventable

According to the, there were more than 2.8 million non-fatal workplace injuries or illnesses during the latest reporting year. During that same year, there were 5,147 workplace fatalities.

We do not know for sure what caused this fatal accident, but we know that Cal/OSHA will conduct a thorough investigation. Construction workers have dangerous jobs, but that does not mean construction companies can relax when it comes to safety. It is vital that employers provide workers with the necessary training and equipment to do their jobs and work to remedy any known hazardous situation.

OSHA has a list of the most common causes of fatalities in the construction industry that they call the “Fatal Four:”

  • Falls (39.2%)
  • Getting struck by an object (8.2%)
  • Electrocutions (7.3%)
  • Getting caught in between objects (5.1%)

While most construction and workplace injury claims are handled through workers compensation, the nature of construction work means that there are usually third parties involved. When that is the case, an injured worker may be eligible for more compensation through a personal injury lawsuit.
