Have you heard the expression “work your fingers to the bone”? It means that you work so hard especially at a job with physical labor. It’s not a very good phrase. You usually want that followed up with something like “at least it pays”. But that is not the case for most physical labor jobs. Since more physical labor jobs are considered blue collar they aren’t always paid the greatest. Since manual labor relies more on physical strength employees are often seen as replaceable and not as assets to the team. When you work at a place with high physical labor and low pay it causes stress. Stress is a huge factor in workplace injury. More injuries happen when a worker is stressed. Workers compensation covers stress-related injuries, but what if instead of working your fingers to the bone, your job worked your fingers to their death?
At least this was the case with those who worked at Envoy, a subsidiary of American Airlines. Envoy is an airline that employees people at a very low pay rate and very high expectation for their employees to get people and packages to their destination. There is a difference between a job being demanding and a job being impossible. Employees of Envoy in MIA airport have made it clear that Envoy has made their job impossible.
Employees of Envoy have confessed to feeling overstressed, overworked, and expected to meet demands that could not be obtained if they followed safety procedures, so safety procedures were skipped. Because the job is not well paid, it remains understaffed. This further adds to the stress of workers who are currently working. They have the pressure to not only show up every day but adhere to high demands without adequate pay.
Georges Armand was a bus driver for Envoy. He was in charge of driving people to and from the airport. He was 61-years old. The week before he was found dead in the break room he had out in 66 hours in six days. That means that he worked 11-hour shifts every day for six days. Armand had a heart attack in the break room and once he was found was taken to the hospital where he later died. He worked for Envoy for over 20 years.
